Honorable

Forward Cardwell Esq Mr. P.

Deputy Secretary of State for the Colonies

Downing Street, London

31th October 1865

"We have the honor, in taking liberty herewith, to transmit for reference, Inclosure Originals and Copies of Correspondence, Consequent on an unsuccessful application to His Excellency The Acting Governor of this Colony, for redress from the personally injurious result of an unjust Accusation and prevention, brought against us by the Local Postmaster General, referring our grievance as therein stated for Consideration and decision under your paramount Authority. It being a great offence to tap at the Hongkong Post Office Windows, being the only expedient to obtain overdue Mails, not aware of any existing, and we certainly were not aware of any existing prohibition, that we did no more on the occasion, can be substantiated by a Gentleman, himself a Government Official, who also tapped at the Post Office Window for his letters, and was cognisant of our Conduct during that Evening from 8 o'clock till half past 10 o'clock, when we arrived..."
